How to Be Successful as a New Manager- The Muse

Step by step instructions to Be Successful as a New Manager-The Muse Step by step instructions to Be Successful as a New Manager-The Muse That passage level occupation you began 13 months prior has become natural to you. Truth be told, you have it so wired that your manager needs to think of imaginative, better approaches to keep you tested and intrigued. She requests that you do things like preparing new representatives as they get recruited, or speaking to your gathering on a cross-utilitarian group that is taking a shot at a high-perceivability activity. Whatever the situation, you sense it's an ideal opportunity to make the jump and take on a mid-level position that will assist you with developing expertly, actually, and monetarily. Be that as it may, getting advanced might be simpler than dealing with your new obligations. As per the Diane Egbers and Karen Schenck, 40% of recently advanced pioneers come up short in new jobs inside year and a half. Why? Heaps of reasons: from over-assessing your availability to not clicking with your new chief. Here are three different ways to think contrastingly and be fruitful in your first mid-level employment: 1. Turn Upward (Not Just Down) Your first position included overseeing subtleties and strategies, critical thinking, and finishing assignments that were for the most part present moment. These are looking down undertakings. Further developed positions include nitty gritty undertakings and strategies as well, yet these positions additionally include having the option to turn upward so you can perceive how all the assignments interface with each other to frame an entire arrangement. The most significant assignments administrators face take additional time, information, and thought to explain. For instance, being an agreement overseer or task bookkeeper are employments that take super look down abilities, including overseeing subtleties and perspiring the little stuff. Yet, when individuals in those jobs get elevated to being an associate task or agreement chief, they may get responsible for the entirety of the financial plans and costs at work not simply the ones related with one component of the undertaking. Realizing how to oversee gatherings of capacities falls into that classification. Before hopping to arrangements like you may have done previously, ensure you're seeing the entire picture and how each piece associates with the others. 2. Figure out how to Embrace And-Both Thinking (Instead of Either-Or) With your new duties, do you center around transient issues like assessing costs on a standard premise or long haul needs like re-vamping significant strategies? In the event that you needed to settle on a decision between doing what is best for the investors (like taking another agreement with a lucrative client, who whines about everything and is disheartening to work with) and what is best for the representatives (like, stating no to this sort of new business) how might you choose? Each choice and each response to an issue for the most part accompany a drawback that is an exchange off to its upside. Be interested and explore all the points of significant choices. You're not simply the individual accused of executing the undertaking: You're accused of building up the best arrangement. You'll have to see the legitimacy of all perspectives, regardless of whether they're conflicting. Start by seeing your inclination to need to misrepresent things or to get awkward in complex circumstances. Probably the most intelligent answers you will arrive on will consider the ill defined situations of a circumstance and find new and imaginative approaches to oblige different interests. In this way, in the circumstance above, you'd need to consider both your investors and representatives by concurring on obviously characterized quality principles that your group can live with as a state of taking on the customer's new business. 3. Make the Shift From Me to We Alright, so it sounds sappy, yet it's actual. Passage level representatives need to put everything in order and become fruitful as individual givers. At the point when you climb the stepping stool, you must be a cooperative person who isn't as worried about getting high fived on the grounds that you worked admirably. Your emphasis ought to be on supporting everybody's commitments. Since your new position is all the more firmly snared to crafted by others, chip away at truly building up the aptitudes that go into being an incredible colleague. These incorporate tuning in with compassion, characterizing responsibility and authority plainly, having troublesome discussions, and realizing yourself better. Mid-level workers are the heartbeat that drives execution in associations. They are the basic connection in the chain between the practitioners on the bleeding edge and strategizers at senior levels. Of the considerable number of jumps you'll make, the most significant one is the jump of outlook from being happy with your own individual commitments to more extensive wellsprings of fulfillment in the aggregate achievements of gatherings and groups. It Is 2011

It is 2011 â€" have you updated your resume yet? This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- . The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security. Top 10 Posts on Categories Your resume is the most important document to help you in your job search. Yet, we treat it like a second class citizen and only pay attention to it when disaster strikes: when we need to find a new job. You know how that script goes â€" you decide to find a new job or are laid off, search frantically on your hard drive to find your resume last updated three years ago and now struggle to figure out what you did over the past three years to add to the resume. You fail miserably because the mind has a terrible memory. Especially for such joyous events as your terrific business results you need to add to that three-year old resume to make it shine in today’s job market. So instead of trying to figure out all your New Year’s Resolutions or determining your Word of the Year or deciding on your goals for 2011, do something doable, solid and valuable to help your Employment Security from this point going forward: update your resume. Here’s what you should update: If you haven’t updated your resume in three years (or more!), the first order of business is to add in all of your positions since your resume was last written. This seems like a simple task â€" until you start figuring out exactly what your job titles were, the dates you were in the position and then the results you achieved in the job. Get all of that in as a bare minimum so you don’t have to go through figuring it out two years from now when you are even less likely to remember what you were doing in 2007. Hey â€" you just had your annual performance review or just completed a year’s worth of SMART Goals â€" so how did you do? Those are business results that you contributed to the department. If your goals were set up right, you have specific measurements that tell you your goal attainment and that is either in your performance review or your goal attainment tracking. Now is the time to pull all that and put it in the resume. And pull ALL of it â€" every last business result that helped your manager. It is far better to have way too much information in the resume now. Far easier in the future when you are looking for a job to pare back the information in the resume to match up with the job. But something minor â€" like having the State Government as a customer â€" could mean the difference in getting a great job (with the government because you had them as a customer differentiating you from all the other applicants!) simply because you added it to the resume now so you don’t forget it later. All that stuff about one page resumes or four page resumes doesn’t mean anything now. Write a book about your business results. You can pare back the information later and format the resume following whatever the 4,000 rules are for resumes when you go look for a job. Right now the most important thing is to get your accomplishments into your resume so you have them and all the supporting documentation for use later when you look for a job. Listen, the key to careers now is achieving employment security â€" not job security. Employment security means you can find a job in any economy because you’ve built the skills needed to be a Cubicle Warrior. And part of those skills is taking the time to update your resume with your great business results from 2010. Get them in the resume before it all fades to black. Take out your resume now. Are you ready to look for a job? Photo by flazingo_photos Photo by flazingo_photos Nice post Scot! I especially advocate that everyone maintain a “living, breathing” resume that they can constantly update with each new accomplishment, duty, and position. Then, when it’s time to send a resume, just pick the stuff that would be most relevant to the position you’re seeking and leave out the rest. Reply This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules â€" . The Generational Fault Line - Quake or Tremor - Career Pivot

The Generational Fault Line - Quake or Tremor - Career Pivot The Generational Fault Line Why the contrasts between ages will reshape your working environment There is a positive Generational Fault Line that was obviously meant in another report I was approached to audit. The report,The Great Generational Shift â€" Why the contrasts between ages will reshape your work environment was created by Hudson, a main supplier of specific enlistment, ability the executives, and enrollment process re-appropriating administrations in the Americas and around the world. This is by a wide margin the most complete investigation of generational issues in the working environment that has given psychographic appraisals to a huge crowd (28,000) and was multicultural (22 dialects). I have composed broadly on the Multi-Generational Workplace on this blog. This report generally underpins a considerable lot of the ends that I have composed yet is sponsored with a thorough investigation of thousands of laborers. Generational Fault Line in Leadership Style Gen X-ers were prepared in customary administration attributes dependent on driving, unequivocal, spurring, and influential. People born after WW2 scored altogether higher in these initiative attributes than Gen X and Gen Y. Be that as it may, the report states: The present workforce shouldn't be convinced of the realities (they can check Google) however rather looks for pioneers who can filter through hills of information and make an interpretation of it into important bits of knowledge. Gen Y has been brought up in the time of enormous information. It is increasingly about having the option to dissect information and make an interpretation of that into business results. Person born after WW2 pioneers were prepared to be vital in their authority style. Gen Yers have entered the activity advertise during a period of colossal change and vulnerability. The report states: Age Y is considerably less 'vital' than Boomers, which may mirror the present progressively unstable and unsure business condition. It is more earnestly than it was in the past to grow long haul business procedures, and pioneers should be deft to manage visit changes to the serious scene. Long haul procedure is far less significant in this present reality where you must have the option to turn… and rotate rapidly. Do you see the generational separation point pressure building? Tune in to the latest scene Boomers Will Have to Adjust Expectations The generational separation point is going to move. In the event that you are a child of post war America, you need to acknowledge it will occur! With many gen X-ers unfit to resign, children of post war America should alter their desires. The investigation finds that people born after WW2 are less aggressive and charitable than Gen Y. I can't represent everybody, except I am far less aggressive now in my late 50s than I was in my 20s and 30s. There is no doubt in my psyche that Gen Y is definitely more charitable than children of post war America. The report states: As new administration attributes creep into the work environment, Boomers should know about the key drivers behind the obviously extraordinary conduct. Dodging judgment and grasping Boomers have an extraordinary arrangement still to add to the workforce in the coming two decades, in their own aptitudes as well as in passing on these abilities and tutoring more youthful ages. However they are less aspiring and charitable than more youthful individuals so should be roused to share those abilities in different manners. I recently composed that it is almost certain you will work for somebody who resembles your child! Is it accurate to say that you are prepared to tutor the cutting edge to be pioneers? I have communicated worry in the past on where Gen Y will get and learn authority aptitudes given the destruction of long haul corporate work. There is a clear generational separation point between Baby Boomer and Gen Y desires in the working environment. Age Y May Not Be Entitled and Impatient, Just Misunderstood I have said again and again that: Gen Y is how they are on the grounds thatâ€"we made them that way! Gen Y was brought up in a situation where everybody wins. Everybody gets a trophy or blue lace. These desires should be overseen. Simultaneously, they were brought up in an associated world. They are utilized to consistent interchanges and, accordingly, input. I hear objections that Gen Y don't have relational abilities. They have totally different relational and interchanges styles than gen X-ers or Gen X. The report states: Brought up in an associated world, they will likewise like to convey through non-customary channels and may require more normal input and support than different ages might suspect fundamental. Associations need to guarantee they know about the advantages of a balanced individual and give chances to Generation Y to see and experience different attributes, for example, inspiration and influence in real life. Shouldn't something be said about Gen X Lori Hock, Hudson CEO Americas expressed: Age X should turn into the ambassadors in this extraordinary generational move. They should take in customary administration abilities from people born after WW2 and adjust them to the new work environment. They should figure out how to lead yet impart to person born after WW2 initiative and cutting-edge Gen Y pioneers. Each age is fundamental going ahead in to keep the age separation point from making a tremor. Each age should make modifications and facilities to make a more grounded and increasingly joined group. This is in the nick of time, particularly in the USA, as we have a lot of new and re-working to do ahead. Business, obviously, is changing a lot quicker than any new way is supplanting it. Set aside the effort to download and peruse this report, The Great Generational Shift â€" Why the contrasts between ages will reshape your work environment. 2 Miles from Disney World - Workology

2 Miles from Disney World 2 Miles from Disney World I love Disney World. It never gets old for me. I go every chance I get and I geek out about it every time. I get updates on new rides, restaurants and attractions so I can be prepared. I know the ins-and-outs of the parks and resorts. And I know Goofy is definitely NOT a dog. Ive spent the past couple days attending the HR Florida conference in Orlando. Ive had a fantastic time so far met more great people, learned and refreshed my HR mind, and got to see behind the curtain of one of the greatest HR shows on earth. Its a privilege and Im beyond honored to be here. Unfortunately, Im not one of those bloggers who can bang out a post immediately after consuming sessions. I wish I was. But my creative juices just dont flow like that. So youll have to tune in next week for my wrap up posts. What I can share now is the view from my room at the resort hotel. Its absolutely beautiful! I have a fantastic view of Downtown Disney, Hollywood Studios and parts of EPCOT and the Animal Kingdom from here not to mention the magnificent pool and golf courses too But I can see Disney World from my room!!! Did I mention I love Disney??? 2 Miles from Disney World So here I am only 2 miles from one of my favorite places. The temptation is to ditch something conference related and go to the World. Or postpone something related to my life back in Raleigh NC so I can stay a day or two longer and enjoy the World once the conference is over. But I wont do either. Because now is just not the time for that. It occurs to me that we face this in our organizations every day. Projects we wish we were doing. Meetings we wish we were attending. Discussions wed rather be having. The temptation to ditch or delay what is necessary in order to do something more fun or easy an all-too-familiar conundrum. Dont do it. Dont abandon the necessary things for the desirable things. And never abandon either for what is right and/or essential. Why? Someones always watching. Im not just talking about getting caught or in trouble; Im talking about providing appropriate examples. If youre slacking, the people reporting to and working alongside you will think its OK for them, too. Desirables dont have deadlines. Usually, the fun and easy things wed rather be doing dont have any due date or pressure along with them. When we are ready and have true time for them, the desirables will be there. Without a doubt, we all need down time and respite in our workdays and our work lives. And just like anything else we do, that requires proper planning and a little patience. Always be patient with yourself and the process it takes to get where you want to be. So instead of having a tantrum or stealing moments that arent really going to give the full experience, Im going to enjoy being 2 miles from Disney World with some of the best and brightest in my profession and wait with anticipation until I get to truly vacation in Disney World again (about 450 days from now, but whos counting?!?) Be sure to follow all the great sharing from the HR Florida conference on Twitter and Instagram using the #HRFL13 hashtag and read more about it on their blog HR Mouth of the South. Then get back to doing whats necessary in your world.

Using the C.A.R. Method on your Resume

Utilizing the C.A.R. Strategy on your Resume Have you heard me talk about the C.A.R strategy? In the event that you are a customer of mine, you have. Its a technique I use in each and every resume. It is, to me, the absolute most significant factor when expounding on your achievements. Alright, so what does C.A.R. represent and I'm not catching it's meaning for you? C.A.R. represents: Challenge Action Results While talking with customers and continuing with the information mining process, I generally get some information about their C.A.R. stories. What were the narratives behind their achievements? What was happening in the organization before they took on the issue? Give the peruser some foundation, not a novel, only a trace of what the earth resembled. So ask yourself, what was the Challenge I confronted when either an) I joined the organization or B) I took on the new circumstance or C) I was promoted? Briefly talk about the Challenge. Once more, it doesnt must be excessively protracted. You simply need to convey the desired information. For the Action divide, this is the place you can discuss what you did to determine or change the circumstance. What activity or steps did you take? For certain employments, it may be very point by point, however I wouldnt prompt discussing each and every thing. Sum up as most ideal as. Keep in mind, HR individuals have heaps of resumes to survey and not a great deal of time. For the Results segment of C.A.R., talk about the outcomes. What was the level of creation increment? What amount did you increment deals or individuals profitability? Use numbers and rates at whatever point conceivable. These are the things that stick out and make you progressively employable as managers need PROOF of what you are fit for doing it gives them what you can accomplish for them also. C.A.R. is the most effortless approach to pull out your achievements on the off chance that you are making some hard memories considering what you did. Good karma! Technorati Profile z5iqbm5qjw

What To Wear for a Skype Interview (Reviewed June 2020)

What To Wear for a Skype Interview (Reviewed June 2020) What To Wear for a Skype Interview Other Preparations 2020 what to wear for a skype interview - Image Source: UnSplash.com / Caleb BettsIf you  have been invited to sit for a job interview via Skype, do not for one second disregard the fundamental requirements of the classic, traditional interview, and what to wear for a job interview. The question of what to wear for a Skype interview is only one of a few factors of the pretty much ‘all visual’ nature of online facetime that you have to nail, even before you think about how you’re going to respond to questions.  What to Wear for a Skype Interview Other PreparationsThis isn’t just about clothing, but a full, in-the-round realtime visual representation of your best self. It is  so  important that you don’t take for granted the ‘one remove’ nature of the interview as some kind of a pass. Think about the potential for comicâ€"and fatalâ€"mishap if you were to wear a slick shirt and tie, but pair it with shorts or sloppy  sweat pants, just because the interviewers can’t see your lower half. What happens if you have some form of IT-related problem or have to rise from your seat at some point? The half-baked approach is tempting fate.  ImageNamePriceConsult Expert Sources! What to Wear for a Skype Interview Other Prep Consult Expert Sources! Image Source: Amazon Check Price One of the best ways around the anxieties of how best to prepare for a Skype Interview is, of course, to look at what the experts say, and there is no shortage of literature on the subject of how to excel in video/Skype interviews, with Mike  Koenigs’ great little guide  How to Be a Video Interview Pro being one pretty good example. If you were to boil these tips and strategies down to a single essence, though, it’s that you should never treat the  Skype interview casually in any way.  Skype interviews have  their own intricate set of protocols that you should research carefully. Like the  telephone interview, you underestimate the  Skype variant at your peril! It might be useful  to think of it as an interview via television. Impressions are conveyed incredibly swiftly from television appearance, and a similarly rapid, and lasting, evaluation process takes place in the mind of the viewer/interviewer during a Skype interviewer.  Think carefully about how quickly you form an opinion about someone while they’re being  interviewed on television. It’s kind of uncomfortable to think of yourself in that position, isn’t it? Well… not if you prepare just as assiduously as you would for a traditional interview. Only there is  a crucial twist. In the Skype interview, appearance is in some ways  much more important. Not only must you choose the correct attire,  but also dress your immediate environment, to ensure  it creates the best impression.2. What to Wear fo r a Skype Interview Other Prep Research the Organisations Dress CodeImage Source:  unsplash.comBase your look on what you expect other employees to be wearing at the job. Naturally, if you can learn  the specific dress code prior to the interview, that will score an important point right off the bat when you meet your inquisitors online. If you’re unable to find the actual guidelines, then keep  it simple. You can’t go wrong with a shirt and tie, although you’re best to avoid any pattern in the shirt. Keep things plain, simple and non-distracting. Image Source: Amazon Check Price Although your bottom half wont be seen, dress professionally from head-to-toe. Apart from ensuring that you will not look foolish in the unexpected event of your having to get out of the chair while online, a full, professional business outfit, head-to-toe, will help place  you in the right frame of mind, and you will feel and act more professionally.3. What to Wear for a Skype Interview Other Prep Be Conscious of Lighting Image Source: AmazonSome experts suggest setting up two lights on each side of your laptop/web cam set-up, so that you can experiment with the ideal lighting, in order to ensure your features are not literally shown in an unflattering light. This touches on the extremely visual nature of the Skype medium for conducting a job interview. Check Price 4. What to Wear for a Skype Interview Other Prep Dressing Your  Surroundings Image Source: Amazon Check Price The  question of what to wear for a Skype interview has implications not only for your own appearance but the appearance of your immediate surroundings. It’s  probable that your only interviewer, or one of them, will be your future manager. You do not want this person to think that your room is a mess. Ensure your home-office or whatever environment you have chosen for the interview conveys impressions of neatness, tidiness, order and professionalism. If your environment is untidy, the implication is t hat so  are you!You could go the whole hog and take a look at something like Donna Paul’s  Home Office Book or any number of other guides to preparing an office in your home, for guidance on this point. Not only will consulting such guides prepare your surroundings cosmetically, but you could regard this as the first step in a process of becoming more productive in your life and work. The bottom line is; if  you take the call  at home, choose a  suitable room a study or lounge and preferably a part of that room with  a neutral backdrop. Things to avoid include any distracting decorations, or anything conveying personal information that a third party does not need to know.  It should go without saying  that if you share the house with others, either ask them to not be at home, or not to walk into the room during your interview. Nothing will derail an interview more quickly, and convey more of a sense of chaotic unprofessionalism, than an uninvited guest. So, when considering what to wear for a Skype interview, cover  all  the basesâ€"think about everything the interviewer will see and make sure it’s perfect. Check Price 5. What to Wear for a Skype Interview Other Prep Computer Display IPS Eye Care Screen with HDMI Image Source: Amazon Check Price It is always a good idea to take a dry run before the interview proper. Practice with a friend  and be vigilant for any errors that prove to be a distraction to the person who is posing as the interviewer.  If you have a flawed internet connection, not only is it annoying, but it also has the potential to fatally disrupt the seamless audio-visual account of your suitability for the job that you have worked so hard to prepare. The wearing of earphones or a headset is recommended. These make the audio much clearer and easier to understand, and eliminate feedback at the interviewer’s end. Remember, it’s best to spot any potential problems in advance, rather than the unsatisfactory, and ultra-distracting, approac h of pointing out or apologise for problems during the actual interview. So there you have it. Now that you have your clothes chosen, and your ‘stage’ appropriately dressed and fully functioning, you know what to wear for a Skype interview. It’s time to research those questions, safe in the knowledge that you really are ready for your close-up. Lights, camera… action!

Best Resume Writing - Tips For Writing a Resume That Will Get You the Job You Want

Best Resume Writing - Tips For Writing a Resume That Will Get You the Job You WantThe best resume writing is an art that is learned through experience. It is not an art, where you know everything about writing resumes. There are some principles that can be followed, however, when creating a resume that will help you land that job you have been applying for.Write your resume using keywords. A resume is a long document that is meant to inform the reader about you. The writing on your resume has to be short and to the point so it doesn't confuse the reader. It also needs to include a strong call to action so it is clear what the person should do if they read your resume. Employers like to see a strong call to action in order to know if you are someone who is going to work hard and do the necessary things to land the job.Informative and engaging writing is key to having a great resume. The purpose of your resume is to get your name out there, so you want to make sure that it is written i n such a way that will grab the attention of the employer. Your resume can tell the story of you to them, and they will be looking for a positive story to follow up on to ensure you are the right fit for the job you are applying for.Keep your resume writing simple. One of the best ways to create a great resume is to avoid overly complicated language or grammatical mistakes. Employers can spot this easily, and it can mean the difference between getting the job or not.Include contact information in your resume. You may have one if you have applied to more than one job or worked in the same company, but always include a phone number and email address in your resume. This can help make a quick response easier for the potential employer, especially if they have an email marketing policy that is not as open-ended as you would like. This can also help to prove to the employer that you are a team player, and are a good communicator.Use several color schemes. When you are writing a resume, i t can be hard to focus on one design, and when you are writing something that will be used on multiple documents, it can be easier to keep one color scheme consistent. Some may prefer the multiple colors of a great resume to the other, but be sure to keep them consistent and it will work out well for you.Select colors that match the color of your shirt. A shirt can give off a message or mood that cannot be explained with words. It is best to use this type of fabric in your resume when you are not wearing a suit or even a shirt. Be sure to take this into consideration when you are choosing colors for your resume. If you follow these tips, you will have no problem creating a great resume. The rules are in place to guide you, but if you are going to follow them, you have to do so from the heart. The best resume writing is an art, and it takes time to learn how to effectively make a great resume.

The Graduate Labour Market in 2017 lies, damn lies and actual statistics

The Graduate Labour Market in 2017 lies, damn lies and actual statistics What do you believe about the graduate labour market? Where do you source your information and how reliable is it? In the era of Big Data, who should you go to for accurate information? The Media presents an often despondent picture of opportunities for graduates, but is what you read in the news robust and reliable? Where do reporters source their evidence? I recently attended the annual conference for Higher Education Careers professionals. This event brings together experts in the graduate labour market whose big data can be relied on. The Media, however, does not always embrace these sources despite being made aware of them, where it risks disrupting the often negative narrative around graduate employability.  The Higher Education Careers Service Unit (HECSU) compiles the annual report on ‘What do Graduates do?’ and so is used to grappling with and analysing large quantities of data.* At the conference, Charlie Ball HECSU’s Deputy Director of Research at Graduate Prospects, presented research findings on the current state of the graduate labour market and addressed some of the common assumptions people make. Myth 1: There aren’t any jobs for graduates Fact:  Six months after graduation in 2016, 74% of graduates were in work. 5.3% were unemployed â€" the lowest rate since 1998/89 441,000 new professional jobs were created last year (although the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DLHE) showed that only 291,000 new graduates entered these so many graduate level jobs were not filled) Conclusion:  The current outlook for graduates remains positive with more jobs than there are graduates to fill them. Myth 2: graduates only work for big business or on large training schemes Fact:  In 2016, 34% of graduates went to work for companies with fewer than 250 employees and one in six were with companies with fewer than 50 employees. Small to Medium Sized Employers (SMEs) are especially important in the arts, design, architecture, marketing/PR/Advertising, sport/fitness, law and web design SME graduate employment is stronger in London and south of England. Conclusion: SMEs are a substantial source of employment opportunities. Myth 3: all the graduate jobs are in London Fact: 15.2% of the population lives in London 19.4% of UK graduates live in London 21.6% of graduates started their career in London, with many of those jobs confined to a relatively small area of London 23% of the country’s businesses are in London 50% of the population in London are graduates- compared to 38% nationally, average weekly earnings are £679 compared to £525 nationally Where did 2016 graduates work? Westminster (5475) Birmingham (4080) Manchester (3790) City of London (3545)  Leeds (3445) Glasgow (3400) Kent (3110) Hertfordshire (3040) Surrey (3000) Camden (2995)  Hampshire (2675)  Edinburgh (2595) Essex (2430)  Belfast (2315) Tower Hamlets (2270) Bristol (2140)  Southwark (2090)  Liverpool (2065) Cardiff (2045)  Oxfordshire (2035) Conclusion: Of those working in cities, 31.2% of recent graduates headed to the capital, while 68.8% selected other cities. Myth 4: Graduates travel all over the country and abroad to work after graduation Fact: 58% went to work in the region they studied in 69% went to work in the region they were originally domiciled Only 18% of graduates went to work somewhere they were not connected to Conclusion: Graduates are much less mobile than commonly assumed. Myth 5: You’re better off not going to University   Fact: Student loan repayments aside, in earnings terms the average graduate salary in 2016 was £32,000 compared to the average non-graduate salary of £26,500. Over time, of course, it will be interesting to see how many prospective students are attracted to graduate level apprenticeships as opposed to full or part time degrees. Conclusion: There are differences in salaries within different sectors. However there is an overall difference between the levels of pay for graduates and non-graduates. Myth 6: Leaving the EU will be disastrous for the economy Fact: Nearly 40% of businesses surveyed had seen employment rise over the past 12 months, while only 15% had reduced employment. A smaller but still positive net balance of companies expected to increase staff numbers over the next 12 months. Conclusion: At this stage, it is too early to be certain of the full impact of Brexit on graduate employment as there is insufficient information available. In summary: The graduate labour market is fundamentally sound with a long-term trend for expansion Outcomes remain good, with low unemployment A reduction in the numbers of graduates may lead to pressure on supply, leaving graduate jobs unfilled Skills shortages are significant and worsening There is little evidence of significant Brexit effect on early graduate labour market at the moment Graduate mobility seems to be falling- it is hard to say whether this is a trend The key message is: always question the legitimacy of your information sources and check their currency. It’s easy for statistics to be manipulated to tell a particular story. If quoted from so-called ‘trusted’ sources myths can quickly gain currency and distort reality. *Data sourced from: Department for Education, Centre for Cities, Higher Education Statistics Agency, Office of National Statistics, British Chamber of Commerce,  Bank of England.

How to Identify Creativity During Interviews

How to Identify Creativity During Interviews It is every employer’s dream to have a team that is self-driven, sets new goals and comes up with new ways to explore their challenges. They are the creative type, who value self-expression and consider fulfilment of their passion as a reward on its own. If you are one, you know what I’m talking about. Creatives are highly sought-after and it is common to come across job postings that highlight the need for a creative approach. That’s a pretty vague term. Creativity, however, is not vague and there are certain traits that are common among all creative people. The common traits of creatives Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, perhaps the most noted researcher on ‘creativity’, identified these common personality traits among creative individuals in different lines of work. Creative individuals are energetic yet highly composed. They possess focus and are enthusiastic but also have strict downtimes for self-reflection. They have a mixture of maturity and childishness to their character. The emotional immaturity plays a key part in their approach to problems. They enjoy a light-hearted yet disciplined environment. No wonder they pursue careers that make them happy. Creatives tend to lose themselves in fantasy that are grounded in reality. Their way of looking at life might seem bizarre but results in outcomes that people tend to relate to over time. They show traits of both extroverts and introverts at the same time. A sense of pride mixed with humility is characteristic of all creatives. They have a sense of their own proficiency but constantly aim for greater challenges. Creative people are known to be psychologically androgynous, meaning they defy gender stereotypes. They are rebels at heart but also show conservative notions. It comes from being coherent with their choices and knowing what they want. They are passionate about their work yet objective about its worth. Creative individuals can reflect on the standard of their own work which help them evaluate its limitations. They love to explore art, culture and new interests but have a low threshold for pain. Bad quality in anything they have a taste for repulses them. If any of the above seem true in your case, you probably are a creative type yourself. In that case, you would know a creative person in an interview. It’s not always so easy though, right? So let’s build a list of idiosyncrasies to look out for in your candidates which will highlight them as creative individuals. Creative is as creative does 1. Are they observant? Creatives are a highly observant lot. It is not something they focus on. They just happen to observe everything. If you look at the works of geniuses like Hayao Miyazaki and Noam Chomsky, much of their work comes from a keen observation of society. They engage in people watching, capture nuances and can pick up on behavioural patterns. Check if the interviewee has an eye for detail. Their ability to gather information from subtle ideas will show that they are, indeed, a creative person. 2. What hours do they prefer working? This can be phrased as a direct question or you can lead the candidate to speak of their preferable working hours. Most creative people actually have odd working hours. Some feel productive in the wee hours of the morning while others might say they like working at night. Whatever might be the case, creative people have a distinct choice when it comes to when they like to work. They work the hours that work best for them. If the candidate voices a preference, it would suggest they get into their creative flow during that period. 3. How aware are they when they are in flow? Make them talk about something they feel passionate about. Creative people tend to lose track of time when engaged in activities they are genuinely invested in. But it’s important to keep time when it comes to business, right? Of course. But when you get better output by cutting a little slack, forcing a time schedule would kill the creativity that gives your team the edge in the first place. 4. Notice their dress sense How are they dressed for the interview? For startups that allow a casual dress code, most candidates would stick to what they feel comfortable wearing. If the candidate is a creative type, you’d notice their taste in fashion. Creative people have excellent taste and they know what works well on them. It would be a stretch to say all fashionable people are creative. But creative people are, for the most part, great when it comes to expressing their sense of style. 5. How do they rate themselves? Creative people tend to aim for bigger goals than others. They are always striving to achieve something more. They are their own biggest critic. So a creative individual would always see room for personal improvement. But they also happen to know their own strengths. Which means a creative person would expect a competent pay and might quote a higher package than your other candidates. 6. Watch how they communicate A creative might come across as eccentric at first encounter. If you pay attention, you’d see they have a personal approach to communicating ideas. This is a result of not conforming to the textbook approach and having their personal view of the world. They have a very clear grasp of the matters that interest them and discussing those would lead them to express things the same way they approach the subject in their mind. In fact, they are very good at getting ideas across in their own way. A candidate who shows these particular signs in their interview can be recognized as a creative type. It is important to note that hiring a creative or running a team of creatives is tough trade since they might not conform to traditional values. Often though, the outcome of their work is of far better quality just because they seek reward in improving themselves.
